20th Century Sutter County Floods
The following video was prepared by Sutter County to show residents how extensive the flooding and damage might be if a levee broke in Sutter County today. Before starting this presentation, think about how you would get your family and your animals out before the waters rise. As the pictures progress, think about how you might need to take care of your family and animals if your home was flooded and you couldn't return right away.

Q: Do you help with horses, cows and other livestock?
A: Yes, yes and yes
Q: What about birds?
A: We have training on pet birds in cages all the way to emus on acreage
Q: What if I have a snake?
A: We will provide shelter for your domesticated animal if we are able to handle it. If you have an exotic pet, please prepare for emergencies ahead of time and make advance arrangements for temporary shelter out of town.
Q: How does your program work:
A: If an evacuation is called by authorities in the Yuba-Sutter area, they will call us. We then mobilize our volunteers to report to a designated area. We then take in pets and livestock dropped off by owners.
Q: If my house is flooded or my home is in a fire area, what happens to the pets I've left behind?
A: YSDADA is prepared to take custody of pets and livestock that are rescued by "first responders" who go into dangerous areas and rescue people and animals. Once the first responders bring the animals to us, we will shelter them until you are able to claim them.
Q: Flooding is a common concern in this area. If an evacuation is called, what do I do?
A: Because we have a flooding concern in the valley and fire concers in the foothills, you should prepare in advance for the possibility of evacuation. Make sure your pet carriers and/or livestock trailers are ready to go. We can provide you with instructions for a pre-prepared "Go Bag" for your household pets. We want you to prepare for evacuation for your family and your animals and we will be there along the evacuation route to take in your animal that is not welcome at the shelter or local media will direct you to our shelter for drop off.
Q: What local media will tell us about your shelter?
A: AM 1600 KUBA is the designated emergency radio station for the area. If a situation is developing, the Appeal-Democrat will also have information for you. We recommend that you tune into KUBA for up to the minute information as the situation unfolds.

A: See the links above. The Northeastern California Chapter of the American Red Cross also offers free seminars to community groups on disaster preparedness. Contact them to arrange a presentation for your group.
